Understanding the Daily Vedic Panchangam
A Panchangam (derived from Sanskrit Pancha meaning five and Anga meaning limbs) is the traditional Hindu astronomical calendar that maps celestial rhythms to daily life. It tracks five essential astrological markers calculated from the relative angular positions of the Sun and Moon.
1. Tithi (Lunar Day)
The longitudinal distance between the Sun and Moon in increments of 12 degrees. Divided into Shukla Paksha (waxing bright fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (waning dark fortnight).
2. Vara (Solar Day)
The seven days of the week, each governed by a celestial ruler: Ravivara (Sun), Somavara (Moon), Mangalavara (Mars), Budhavara (Mercury), Guruvara (Jupiter), Shukravara (Venus), and Shanivara (Saturn).
3. Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion)
The 27 stellar divisions of the 360-degree zodiac, each spanning 13°20'. The Moon traverses one Nakshatra approximately every 24 hours, shaping daily mental temperament.
4. Yoga & Karana
Yoga represents the combined angular longitude of the Sun and Moon (27 Yogas), while Karana is half of a Tithi (60 Karanas in a lunar month), guiding auspicious actions.
Auspicious Timings & Inauspicious Periods
Every solar day contains specific windows: Abhijit Muhurtham (the mid-day eighth muhurtha) is universally auspicious for new beginnings, while Rahu Kalam and Yamagandam are avoided for sacred ceremonies. Choghadiya divides the day and night into eight 90-minute planetary intervals (Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Rog, Kaal, Udveg) for selecting auspicious travel and commercial timings.
